With the first coin minted by King Croesus, barter is replaced with coins for payment. You are a ruler and send merchants for barter to city gates to increase your estates and resources. Gold coins are introduced and carry enormous buying power. A turn comprises 1. Draw merchant from your bag, 2. Place merchant at gate or font, resolve action of the location, and 3. Place merchant from font into your bag. Gate actions are taking resources from estates or gate, and taking merchants, swap resources for coins or relocate merchants to font. Font actions are buying estate or upgrading estate. Resources markers at the end of their track give you bonuses. If someone has achieved the necessary number of upgraded lands, you score – at the end of the round – victory points on silver and gold cards, influence track, value of purple cards, and coins, if you hold the well token.
