Victual brothers are pirates and endanger trade routes; you defeat them with money and persons, defeated pirates give victory points.
In the Spring phase, you place a pirate ship on the first building that is drawn. If you take such a building, you display it, it counts as hand card all the same. To build this building you defeat the pirate by paying two ducasts per ship in your display and then place the ship on a Knight or Merchant in another building; this symbol no longer counts towards Archiv, Wirtshaus or Bank. A Kran only halves building costs, not pirate costs! Without Knight or Merchant on buildings already built you cannot defeat a pirate. At the end of the game a defeated pirates scores two points; a building not built, carrying a pirate, scores four penalty points.
