Chasing culprits with dice

 

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are on holiday and the hobby detectives of Baker Street try to catch up with culprits to support Inspector LeStrade. Three deduction dice represent characteristics of possible culprits. One die shows 2x three colors - green, orange and blue; one die shows 2x three symbols for the shape - roundish, tall and female; and one die shows 2x three numbers of culprits - 1, 2 and 3. For each possible result of three dice there are two cards displaying that combination of characteristics.

The active player rolls all three dice, one after the other, in the order of his choice. After each roll all players try simultaneously to get rid of one card showing all of the characteristics in demand; characteristics not yet determined by one or two dice may be chosen at will. If, for instance, 1 and tall were rolled, the color of the card can be any of the three. The fastest player may leave his card for the discard pile, all others take their card back. If you put down an unsuitable card, you take it back and must also take the top card from the discard pile. When nobody can shed a suitable card you ignore the result of previous rolls in the remaining rolls of the turn. If you are out of cards first, you win.

Bakerspeed offers a good mix of standard mechanism, all of them well-known. The allure of the quick game is in in the speed of your reaction and most of all in the choice of dice to roll - this introduces a bit of tactic to the game; if, for instance you only hold cards of one color you will probably not roll the color die first. All in all a rather chance-driven but very nice family game.
