Skirmish: The Scrambles

Monsters fight for treasure

Monsters in the woods who usually only frighten animals or worry adventurers, hear about treasure chests in their realm and fight for them. You guide those monsters and win with most points after five rounds or if you hold four or more treasure cards.

You take all cards of your color and prepare the deck for a game; you can play with or without handicap, adding weaker monsters accordingly. Seven treasure cards are laid out face-down, each player removes one, so that five remain for five rounds.

Now you play one round per treasure cards, both players play the nine steps in a round simultaneously: A treasure card is turned up - each player places a monster card from his hand face down next to the treasure and both cards are revealed simultaneously. If you mistakenly played a magic card or placed a False Monster or no Monster at all, you lose the round; when both players do so, there is a tie; if there is no tie both draw a card and then place two cards face down to the treasure and reveal them. Now magic cards are resolved in ascending order and then you compare monsters' strengths. If you have more you win the round and take the treasure. In case of a tie the treasure is discarded. Whoever wins two treasures with a crown symbol first, takes the crown card, worth 7 points. You replenish your hand to six cards and continue to play rounds until all treasures are taken.

Skirmish offers a game of comparing card strength, but with interference by magic cards to counter opposing cards, a bit according to "I believe you will play, but you think that I think that you play …". Quickly played, rare and nice for a fast interlude.
