Four playing pieces need to be arranged in an orthogonal or diagonal row or in a connected square. At the start, players alternate to place their pieces into the border slots, two pieces of the same color cannot be adjacent. Then players take alternate turns, over any distance orthogonally or diagonally, you cannot jump over pieces. In the King variant you use four flat and one high piece, this King piece must be part of the formation; in the King Plus variant you must move to the border of the board or up to another piece.
