Imperialism
Road to Domination
In the period from the 15th to the 19th you try to create mighty empires, initiate economic growth as well as social and cultural achievements and also modernize and expand armies and fleets. Yet war is not always the best or first solution.
A turn comprises a Changing Hand phase and an Action phase. You also must take an available achievement card as soon as you meet the requirements. Changing Hand comprises discarding of up to three cards and then drawing cards from open and face-down choices, up to your hand limit. In the Action phase you choose one of five action options – Development, Intrigue, Conquest, War or Taxes.
For Development you take one of eight goods and can glean Gains from the Trade, Leader Gains for highest production level and Economic gain. For the option of Intrigue you paly cards, for Conquest you play a territory card or place a marker. War cards are played on another player, the outcome is decided by comparing attack and defense strength. The loser chooses – to make peace – from the options of paying Tribute, Territorial Adjustment or Political Humiliation. Then the attacker can do Plundering. For the option Taxes you take as many ducats from the bank as you have territory cards laid out. For Achievements and Cultural Flowering you also win glory points. If the end-of-game mark on the glory track is passed, you add glory from Rank 1 and 2 in majorities, production levels and from passing on religious change, and win with most glory.
A good game making good use of standard mechanisms for varying winning strategies based on rather simple rules, a very well-working and nice interpretation of the topic.
