Altaria

Clash of Dimensions

Altaria is an island drifting in space an can be reached via dimension portals; crystals control the portals. Controlling the altars of Altaria means control over crystals and portals.

The board is filled with terrain pieces according to a card drawn at the start. To win control over three altars each player uses three out of ten hero characters and has action points for use of character abilities in each of the three phases in each of seven rounds. Those action points are used to move your hero character, to attack your opponent or to put a unique power marker on the board. By interacting with those power markers on the board heroes receive markers for motivation, exhaustion, wounds and forced movement. Power markers are rotated according to marker rules and after a complete rotation a power marker is taken off board, which can trigger his activation. In the standard game event cards are added in each round, they determine the action points of a hero in the three phases of a round and make a new hero ability available for the round. Crystals also enter the game. If you control all three altars on Altaria or enter the opposing portal, you win instantly. Otherwise, the game ends after seven rounds and you win if you control more altars.

A game that entices you to try it out, but you must find your way across a rather chaotic rule book which causes some very interesting detail mechanisms to be unappreciated – power Markers, crystals or hero abilities. If you win the fight for the rules, you win an unusual gaming experience on top of the gaming experience that you need to make a game out of the rules.
