One player represents the forces of Sauron, the other the Free People of Middle Earth who want to destroy the One Ring. This edition is a deluxe version with new design and components. Players only know the identity of their own characters on the board, Sauron starts the game. In your turn you move a character into an adjacent region - you can only have four characters in the Shire or in Mordor, only one character in the mountains and two characters in other region. When opposing characters meet, the currently moved character attacks, the other defends. Characters are revealed, then you can retreat if possible or play a combat card face-down. Defeated characters are removed from the board. Two variants are included.
